Speargrass Flats is a refined holiday home designed to accommodate two large families with ease, generosity, and clarity. The existing house was completely reworked and extended, then delivered as a fully resolved, turnkey interior, allowing the home to be handed over move-in ready with no detail overlooked. Architecture and interiors are unified through material strength, spatial balance, and a deeply considered approach to shared living, creating a cohesive retreat that supports connection, comfort, and life at scale.

Two expansive great rooms with vaulted ceilings and exposed rafters form the backbone of the home, connected at the centre by a newly designed kitchen and informal dining space. Positioned within a bay window, this central zone draws light into the heart of the plan and acts as the main point of convergence. The layout is carefully calibrated to support both everyday family life and larger gatherings, allowing the home to transition seamlessly between moments of intimacy and scale.

Anchoring each end of the great rooms are hot-rolled steel–clad fireplaces with exposed chimney flues rising cleanly through the vaulted volumes. Set on concrete hearths and framed by expansive glazing, these fireplaces act as architectural markers and natural gathering points, grounding the interiors while drawing attention to the surrounding landscape. Designed as mirrored elements, they establish symmetry across the plan while allowing each room to function differently — one composed for formal living and dining, the other more relaxed, conceived as a games room for informal connection.

The kitchen was conceived as a contemporary interpretation of a refectory table, informed by traditional mortise and tenon detailing and subtle shifts in stone finishes that reference the ritual of shared meals. A rustic bandsawn finish to the cabinetry introduces texture and tactility, balanced by steel-finished handles that bring clarity and restraint. Bathrooms continue the home’s grounded sensibility through aged, solid materials, steel accents, concrete stone vessel basins, and sculptural tapware, while cedar wall and ceiling linings introduce warmth and reinforce the sense of retreat throughout the home.
