The Bay House
The Bay House is an interior renovation defined by contrast, transformed from a stark 1990s white-box interior into a warm, layered waterfront home. The design centres on the use of natural surfaces to bring cohesion, depth, and a sense of continuity throughout the space. Thoughtful material layering replaces minimal uniformity, creating an interior that feels grounded, inviting, and responsive to its coastal setting.

The kitchen forms the architectural heart of the home, anchored by a dramatic double-sided stone wall that defines the central island while discreetly screening the scullery beyond. A sliding timber and glass panel introduces warmth and tactility, softening the stone and allowing flexibility between openness and separation. The island becomes a natural gathering point, encouraging connection while maintaining a refined sense of order. Throughout, the layout balances separation and integration, creating distinct zones that remain visually connected.

The sense of cohesion continues into the bathrooms, where the material palette is deliberately reversed from the kitchen to create contrast while maintaining continuity. A picture-framed double vanity incorporates generous mirrored storage, combining practicality with quiet elegance. Carefully considered lighting enhances proportion and materiality, resulting in bathrooms that feel calm, refined, and quietly restorative.

Designed collaboratively during lockdown, the project was shaped through close engagement with the clients, with design decisions refined in real time as drawings evolved. This highly engaged process allowed the interiors to be tailored precisely to the way the clients live, resulting in a resolved and confident outcome that feels both personal and enduring.
